Description:
Objectives and rationale of the project: This project has two GHG reduction objectives and acillary benefits: - reduce CO2 emissions from coal combustion and from coal-based power generation used for heating by substituting wood wastes as a fuel to provide space heating and hot water. - Eliminate increases in future methane emission from new landfills that would have to be built in order to dispose of wood wastes. Ancillary benefits would be: - Reduction in increased goundwater contaminatin from new landfills - Meeting unserved demand for heat and hot water institutional buildings, thereby achieving an important social benefit. Due to logistical problems in delivering coal year-round there are communities that do not have adequate heat supply. - Additional employment would be created throught the use of wood wastes for heat production. - This project could be replicated in more than 50 mountain districts in the Lviv, Zakapattya, Ivano-Frankivs and Chernivtsy oblasts.
