Description:
Objectives and rationale of the project: Methane is one of several greenhouse gases scientists believe contribute to the greenhouse effect, the trapping of heat in the earth's atmosphere. Methane is estimated to be 21 times as potent as carbone dioxide in trapping atmospheric heat. In 1999, Ukrainian coal mines generated approximately 2,060 million cubic meters of methane. Through degasification systems, the mines captured approximately 257 million cubic meters of methane (13% of total generated) and use only 79 million cubic meters of captured methane, thus emitting approximately 1,981 million cubic meters of methane into the atmosphere. The development of this project could significantly reduce the level of greenhouse gases that Ukrainian coal mines emit into the atmosphere and could potentially qualify as a Joint Implementation project. The expected results of this project include: 1) methane capture to be used as fuel; 2) an opportunity to fuel switching; and 3) quality emission reductions.
