Description:
CTI Side Event of COP9 - Incorporating Adaption Issues in the Technology Needs Assessment Process
----------------------------------------------------------
[Summary]
A side event was held on 5 December 2003 during the 9th Session of the Conference of the Parties in Milan, Italy. The side event focused on incorporating adaptation issues in the technology needs assessment, and was attended by more than 60 participants, including representatives from national governments, non-governmental organizations, the EGTT, and the private sector.
The main objectives of the side event were to provide an overview of CTI and to highlight the outcomes of the CTI's Technology Needs Assessment Workshop for the Caribbean Region that had been organized in cooperation with UNDP, EGTT, and the UNFCCC Secretariat. It was noted several times throughout the side event that it is critical to include the private sector in the technology transfer process. During the portion of program devoted to the Caribbean Workshop, thoughtful presentations were made by Mr. Kishan Kumarsingh, Vice Chair of the EGTT, and Dr. Ulric Trotz, Director of the Regional Project Implementation Unit of Caribbean Planning for Adaptation to Global Climate Change. Both of these experts from the region shared their ideas about adaptation and how adaptation fits into the TNA process. Dr. Trotz noted that information dissemination and the development of policy instruments and financial mechanisms for implementation are critical to the TNA process.
The CTI also provides technical assistance and contributes to the UNFCCC process, including support for the Secretariat and the EGTT. A representative of the CTI was invited to and actively participated at all regular and special meetings of the EGTT during 2003.
